Mission
Statement |
| |
The mission statement of
the Practical Nursing Program at the Uintah
Basin Applied Technology College is to provide
the community with caring, competent nurses
who utilize critical thinking skills in
structured settings to meet clients’
needs. This is accomplished through preparing
graduates who value life-long learning and
who are able to address acute and chronic
health care needs in acute long term settings
where policies and procedures are specified
and supervision is available.
|
 |
Description |
| |
Practical Nurses are prepared
to give basic patient care in structured
situation under the supervision of a registered
nurse or a physician. They are respected
members of the nursing team, and as such
participate in the nursing process. Practical
nursing is a basic and necessary part of
the field of nursing, and can be viewed
as a life long nursing practice. Some may
also view it as a stepping-stone to further
their career, in either instance; it will
require a life long commitment to learning.

 |
Employment
Opportunity |
| |
Currently there is a nation
wide nursing shortage allowing for ample
employment opportunity for Licensed Practical
Nurses. The growing aging population in
need of care also affects the demand. There
is a shortage of qualified workers in both rural and
inner city in this career field.

Our
Commitment to Students |
| |
UBATC is proud of its evolving
role in the Uintah Basin. The foundation
of our institution is our commitment to
help students maximize their abilities so
they can achieve their employment goals,
present and future.
Our level of caring and concern for a student’s
success is one thing that makes UBATC a

to job skills, many of our students have
individual needs that must be met before
they can become independent and confident

We offer students personalized instruction.
Students attending UBATC also receive the

ready and willing to help make their educational

History
of Practical Nursing Program at UBATC |
| |
Prior to 1971 the Uintah
Basin was known as an economically deprived
area. The average household income was $3,000
and the unemployment rate was the highest
in the state. The Uintah Basin was known
as an “exporter of youth and a declining
area” (Four corners Regional Report,
May, 1971).
There was a grave need for economic, medical
facility, and education development. With
the vast increase in oil field production
the Uintah Basin soon changed. The population
doubled and average incomes doubled and
tripled. In 1973 the Uintah Basin medical community
consisted of 10 physicians 26 RN’s,
19 LPN’s and 41 Nursing assistants
employed by two hospitals, four medical
clinics, two nursing homes, and two independent
doctors. In response to local needs and
the desire to upgrade care potential, a
practical nursing program was proposed.
In 1974 the Uintah Basin Area Vocational
Center implemented a practical nursing program
and in 1975 graduated its first seven students.
The medical community of the Uintah Basin
has continued to flourish and practical
nursing education has progressed from seven
graduating students in 1975 to the potential
of 24 graduates each year.

Practical
Nursing Education |
| |
Nursing education at Uintah
Basin Applied Technology College incorporates
practice of basic skills with scientific
principles and nursing theory. The knowledge
base has been organized according to body
systems, from simple to the complex, with
one concept building upon another. Students
practice the application of the theory and
principles they have learned, first in a
simulated lab situation then in care facilities
under the supervision of faculty members.
Students not only learn to recognize their
strengths and abilities, but to remain within
the scope of their practice as prepared
to function in a structured situation under
the direction of a registered nurse, physician,
or other primary health care provider.
